I know you know what I’m talking about. There you are driving down the street past a bus and people are w ering around aimlessly through traffic trying to cross the street. I have actually considered putting a sticker on my car that reads “This vehicle brakes for idiots with children.” One day I was driving down the street and saw a woman in a motorized scooter trying to cut off a bus. I wanted to speak to her. I wanted to reason with her. And most of all I wanted to warn her, “Sweetheart I’m sorry but I am almost certain in this match up you will lose.” I have to admit I’ve done it myself. Phoenix isn’t exactly known for a reliable mass transit system. In recent years we developed a light rail system. It’s more of a novelty for most people. It’s used by most people more as a cheap local attraction, as opposed to a staple in their everyday commute. One day me and my family went to ride the light rail to see a movie downtown. I’ve got to say there is something about getting off a mass transit system that makes you think your invincible. You’re riding along watching the street signs pass and then all of the sudden you arrive. You get off at your stop and you have this ah ha moment of excitement and wonder. And then there you are with your companions running around like real world frogger trying to reach your destination. So whether spectator or participant, rider or driver, there is something about getting off a bus that makes you think you are invincible. I don’t think we’ll ever know what it is.
