If you have ever known someone for an extended period of time, sooner or later you will find something out about them that surprises you. We are too certain in our perceptions. We believe if we have known someone long enough we know everything there is to know about them, but it simply is not true.
Next week marks 6 years that I have been with my husband. I must admit I’ve gotten cocky in the abilities of my perceptions. I believed for a very long time, I knew everything about him. His favorite types of literature, his favorite meals, his favorite subjects and his hopes dreams and desires. And yet every day that passes I find out something new about him. He will share a belief, a memory, or an insight and I find myself taken aback.
People often say that their children surprise them. I am not yet blessed enough to have my own, but I hear my friends talk about theirs and glow. They talk about their insight, beliefs and achievements and simply light up with pride. Everyday is a new adventure as the little one explores a bit more of our world.
Don’t ever feel too certain in your own perceptions to think that you could ever know everything there is to know about someone else. Human relationships are dynamic and intricate because all of the beautiful people are too complex. Don’t ever think you know someone too well for them to surprise you.
